Ashwathama was the son of Dronacharya, teacher of Kauravas and Pandavas
in Dwapar Yuga (the third age of the four ages, Sat, Treta, Dwapar and Kali).
His mother's name was Krupi. It is said that at the time of birth there was a
whistling sound in his throat, so he was called Ashwathama (Ashwa means horse
in Sanskrit). Ashwathama had a precious jewel or "Mani", placed on
his forehead, whose use stops his fear of weapons, diseases or hunger, and
stops him from fearing the gods, Danavas (a race of Demons) and Nagas (a deity)
or class of entity or being, assuming the form of a very large snake, found in
Hinduism and Buddhism).
Here Ashwathama, son of Dronacharya, learned of the trick
that Sri Krishna and Yudhishthir played in the murder of his father. To take
revenge at the end of the Mahabharata one night, Ashwathama went to the Pandava
camp. The Pandavas were not present in the field at that time. Thinking that
the Pandavas were sleeping, Ashwathama killed the five sons of Pandava and also
the child in the womb of Uttara, wife of Abhimanyu (the son of Arjun). Shri
Krishna revived the dead child. This boy became more famous as King
Parikshit. Draupadi began to complain about the death of his children.
When the Pandavas returned to their camp and learned that Ashwathama had killed
their children, they became very angry. Here, Ashwathama was also frightened
and knew that the Pandavas would not spare his life. He fled and hid in the
forest on the banks of the Ganges River. There, Sage Maharishi Vyas sat with
other sages. The Pandavas arrived there in search of Ashwathama and Arjun
challenged him in a battle. The frightened Ashwathama propelled the infallible
weapon Brahmastra (a kind of weapon that infallible destruction and was set in
motion by the strength of mantras). Arjun also had the knowledge of Brahmashtra
and used the same to reduce the effect of the Ashwathama weapon.
